Rebecca McMann; Just Radiant
Medium: Photography on Metal
Description: Photography-based abstract art on metal
A keen observer of nature's details, shapes, and patterns, Connecticut based artist Rebecca McMann transforms photographs of everyday objects into striking abstract images which are then printed on aluminum panels. She is inspired by ordinary objects, architectural details, sculptural elements, and mechanical fragments. McMann hopes to "encourage viewers to see common things as strange, wild, or unfamiliar; defamiliarizing what is known, in order to know it differently or more deeply. This approach works well with the artist's non-representational artwork, made up of a compilation of patterns, colors, lines, and textures, much like the quilts the artist remembers from her childhood that were created by her mother and grandmother. McMann has photographed in many locations in the United States, and she encourages viewers to test their observational skills by identifying the objects within her abstract photographs. The artist works in the healthcare industry and incorporates the arts into daily life. Her formal training in calligraphy, graphic art, and sign painting informs her approach to photography, utilizing thoughtful compositions, bold colors, undulating lines and a variety of textures.
