Medium: Mixed Media/ Fiber Art
Description: I am a mixed media artist with fiber techniques at the core of much of my work.
“Fiber Alchemy: 2 Views” at Artwalk, Hartford Public Library Over the course of a year Ellen Schiffman decided to fill a 9” x 9” x 3” shadow box each week with a work utilizing fiber and employing both traditional and experimental fiber art techniques. Having worked as a fiber artist for over thirty years, she set out to explore methods and materials in ways that stretched her as an artist, and redefined the medium. The result, on the wells of the ArtWalk Gallery, is a kind of visual diary, with each box presenting a work of art which was created over the course of a week. You will see Q-tips, egg shells, lichens, drinking straws, rusted items, metal washers, and screws (as well as the more expected silks, wools, and beads.). She felted, embroidered, wove, knotted, wrapped, dyed, beaded, sculpted, manipulated, burned - and also made up many techniques to achieve the results she was after. This project had impact on her work well beyond the yearlong project. The boxes have continued to inspire and inform her work as shown by her other pieces in the show, each inspired by one or more of the 52 boxes. Ellen has had her work included in many prestigious fiber shows and publications nationwide. She is the CT Representative of the Surface Design Association, the premier international organization for textile inspired artwork. Ellen will be on hand to discuss her work on Saturday Nov 12th.
