Artist Profile

Michelle Ignatowicz

Medium: Drawing and mixed media collage

Description:  Drawings and mixed media collage incorporating ephemera

Michelle Ignatowicz: Artist Statement I think of my art as conversations with myself about the world. I have always been interested in social constructs and the inner workings of the human mind. And my work, which is primarily drawing and mixed media collage, explores these topics. I like to combine nostalgic, idealized imagery with elements that appear industrial, imperfect, and aged in order to communicate a story or an idea. My appreciation for objects with a story began at a young age. As a small child, I admired the family heirlooms and antiques at my grandmother’s home. This connection to ephemera has informed my fascination with the history of objects, nostalgic imagery, and their intended and unintended meanings. In my work, I source and/or draw images and then create settings for them, with the intention of conveying social commentary. I also enjoy working with negative space and creating playful compositions where figures appear to break out of their environments. My pieces often reflect the tension between idealism and the darker side of humanity. This interplay is intended to create a sense of irony for the viewer.
