Artist Profile

Susan Prentice

Medium: Oil on canvas, watercolor, pastel, clay

Description:  Vibrantly colorful, stylized, beautifully designed contemporary realism

Artists Statement I have been painting professionally for 18 years. I began my formal art training, majoring in illustration at Syracuse University’s School of Visual & Performing Arts. My career has included advertising art director, graphic designer, photographer and illustrator. My paintings are carefully composed, sometimes highly stylized and they reflect my professional experience. My art gives me the opportunity to convey what I love about the natural world. Strong compositions come from my design background. I work with colors are saturated and convey joy. There are many motivators for me when I make art. Some are external; I am profoundly in tuned to and astounded by nature, plant life and wildlife. Some are internal; When I began to have one woman shows, it became apparent that I had two color palettes. Both come from an emotional response. The warm palette would manifest itself when my world was rosy and full of joy. The cool palette occurred when the world or my life was cause for vexation. I often force myself to create or paint when I am emotionally “under the weather”. Invariably, by the end of that creative day, I am noticeably cheered. Creating art saves me from the sadness and stresses of the world, and I find that my viewers pick up on those emotions when they see my work. The paintings that have soothed my soul, do the same for the viewer. Susan Prentice is a native of Darien, Connecticut and a long time resident of Simsbury, Connecticut. She attended The School of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and was honored with the award for “Outstanding Senior in Illustration”. Susan advanced her career as an award winning art director at internationally known Keiler Advertising in Farmington, Connecticut. Since 1983, she has freelanced in the fields of Marketing Communications, Graphic Design & Art Direction as well as illustration and photography. In 2002 she began an award winning career in Fine Arts. Her mediums are oil on canvas, watercolor, pastel and collage. In 2014 she took a studio at the Farmington Valley Arts Center, studio 6B. The studio showcases a full gallery of her work. It also provides her with the space to teach drawing and painting. She has exhibited throughout the country in shows and galleries. Her work is in private collections throughout the United States. She has lived in an 180 year old Simsbury cottage for 42 years where she tends the gardens that she designed and maintains.
