Normand Charlette

Medium: Digital Photography

Description:  Scenic photographs of New England, primarily landscapes and seascapes

I am a retired 65-year-old former insurance executive and amateur photographer. My experience in photography began with film in the 1980’s while residing in New Jersey. Works were exhibited in art shows held in Dunellen-Green Brook, Plainfield, Raritan, Madison and other locations as a member of the Central New Jersey Art League. Rewards were garnered from the East Brunswick Arts Commission and the Dunellen-Green Brook show as well as local contests conducted by various sponsors. Work requirements curtailed exhibiting but was rekindled with digital photography in recent years. I volunteered to create a gallery at my workplace which involved a steady rotation of my photographs to be displayed in the office. To generate interest in having employees participate in the gallery, I conducted a class in framing and matting. This led to four individual exhibits in the office gallery by employees in various media. Most recently my photographs have been on display at Arts Center East in Vernon, The National Arts Program held at Capital Community College, The Connecticut Audubon Society, and Imagine Main Street in Manchester. In March of this year the “Covered Bridge Graffiti” photograph was awarded second place in the landscapes category conducted by the Land Trusts (Lyme, Old Lyme, Essex, East Haddam, Salem) Photo Contest. The subject matter of my photographs is diverse. The bulk of my most successful work is devoted to New England landscapes and seascapes. The camera seems attracted to lighthouses and barns. My goal with color digital photography is to capture the essence of the subject—at times returning for numerous sessions until the lighting, shadows, composition and shot angle are complementary and visually appealing. The black and white photos will sometimes capture the same scene but challenges the viewer to appreciate the subject from a texture/shadow perspective.
