Originally from Southington, Connecticut, Terese Maineri de Velasquez began appreciating Latin Folk Art at an early age, even buying a paintings of a Guatemalan women in Traje (traditional Guatemalan clothing) at the age of seven because the subject matter intrigued her. Ms. Maineri’s own subject matters often draw from her international experiences. In 2000, Ms. Maineri de Velasquez received a Bachelor’s Arts in Studio Arts and Art History from Clark University of Worcester, Massachusetts. From 1999 to 2000 she served as an apprentice to Marek Czarnecki and learned to restore religious art for churches. In the summer of 1999, Terese completed Art Restoration studies at the Universidad de Artes Aplicadas of Seville, Spain. In 2002, Ms. Maineri completed a Master’s of Arts in International Development and marketed handicrafts for the Consolata Youth Rehabilitation Program’s (COYREP) of Nairobi, Kenya. From 2003 to 2005, Terese served as a Peace Corps Volunteer with the Asociacion Fémenina en el Desarrollo en Sacatepéquez (AFEDES), a micro-credit agency located in Santiago Sacatepequez, Guatemala, which gives loans to women to start their own business. Ms. Maineri has participated in the Angels in the Casa art show at ArtSpace in Hartford, Connecticut. Her pieces were featured in the Hartford Courant and the Better Connecticut television show. June 1, 2013 Ms. Maineri de Velasquez was a featured artist for How was it? an art show which showcased returned Peace Corps volunteers. Photographs shown in Welcome to Bohemia: Guitar Under the Stars Fundraiser! depicted Guatemalan life to bring the viewers attention to the plight people in the developing world. The artist’s hope is that like herself, the viewer will be inspired by the countries rich culture regardless of their troubled history and find her work intriguing. Ms. Maineri de Velasquez Guatemalan paintings were featured in Rutger University, Lasting Impressions. Terese has participated in Open Studio Hartford since November 2013.
