Description: Intimate photos of music performances and the world of nature
Expressions in Sounds and Motion and Views of Natura. Through these photo projects. I am attempting to convey to the viewer both the meditative qualities and the outward, flowing dynamism of musicians at play and the grandeur of nature. I have been on the set, bearing witness with my camera, since the late 70;s. I am a student of the school of trial and error, no formal art training. Just an avid listener, who grew up in a household where all types of music, notably jazz, calypso, rnb, movie soundtracks etc were appreciated. Coming out of UConn in 1975, the Hartford Jazz scene for me, was highlighted by Paul Brown’s Monday night jazz series, the early years of the Artist Collective, Real Art Ways’s, Mr Jackie McLean’s jazz program at Hartt, Hartford Jazz Society offerings, and area clubs like the 880, T Boes Lounge, Jackie O’s and of course trips to NYC and Boston. Prior to my maturation, I was told of Hartford’s Club Sundown, The State Street Theater, Heublein Hotel and other past, venerated scenes that I was too young to experience. All that to say is that Hartford has had and ongoing jazz scene, that presently is nurtured by several great jazz music programs at area high schools, Hartt’s Jackie Mclean jazz program, with professors, Rene Mclean, Steve Davis, Nat Reeves, Rick Rozie, Rich Goldstein and others, The Artist’s Collective, Guakia and the Hartford Performing Arts Academy, the City of Hartford Office of Cultural Affairs, the Hartford Jazz society, the Hartford Public Library and of course all the seasoned musicians that bless this area. My photo work is a love affair with this music, and is simply a quest for displaying the energy of performance and an intimate portrait of some of the past and present contributors to this artform.
