Since childhood, under the tutelage of Master Artist, Aldona Saimininkas, Philitha Stemplys-Cowdrey has been learning the craft of Lithuanian Folk Art. In the winter of 2018, she and Aldona were accepted to the Southern New England Apprenticeship Program and furthered their work together as mentor and apprentice.
"My work explores traditional Lithuanian folk arts and handicrafts, with a concentration on straw art. Over the years I have learned these crafts under the tutelage of Master Artist, Aldona Saimininkas, and I have honed and created my own style to add a modern twist to traditional works. Lithuanian folk art is greatly influenced by its people’s interpretation of the natural world around them. Much of the work I create utilizes mediums I have grown, cultivated, and processed in my own gardens and homestead. This includes various natural plant dyes (onions, beets, etc), eggs, beeswax, and most importantly: rye. I feel it is important my art not only mimics traditional ways, but to be created as close to how it was done originally."
