Paul Zimmerman:1921 — 2007
Paul Zimmerman came to Hartford in 1947 fresh from art school to teach at the new Hartford Art School then housed at the Wadsworth Atheneum. He was invited to teach for two years as an associate professor but stayed at HAS and the West Hartford Art League until his death.
Zimmerman’s earliest works were portraiture frequently using African Americans as his subject. When I asked him why African American, he told me that these were his neighbors. He is more noted through most of his later career for his colorful florals and landscapes.
His works can be found in the Slater Museum, New Britain Museum of Art, the Wadsworth Atheneum, the Springfield Museum and Hartford Hospital.
