Tulane alumnus Colleen Hugo (they/them) lives, works and creates just outside of Hartford, Connecticut. Their large-scale pen and ink drawings draw upon the surrealist art movement, utilizing organic forms in unclear settings to construct an environment as uneasy as it is captivating. Void of context, their depictions of people, animals, and plants strip away preoccupation with the day-to-day and highlight the inherent discomfort of existence itself. Colleen considers their work—which is informed by their personal experience with bipolar disorder—to be a humanist exploration of living, despite.
In addition to drawing, Colleen maintains a poetry practice and goes running just shy of every day. They enjoy long phone calls, befriending cats, and These things help them to remember that this too shall pass, and that no feeling is final.
