Description: The Tombstone Photographs & Baroque Blues (Music & Videos).
Robert Zott takes photographs of tombstones ... not your average tombstones. Each bears a single last name that is also a common English word. When describing his work, he cites Michelangelo who said, “The greatest artist has no single concept that a marble block does not contain already.” The New York Times has written, “Robert Zott’s surveying of graveyards to find tombstones with startlingly appropriate names on them is a fascinating and increasingly well-known obsession.” Robert Zott is also a singer/songwriter who creates a unique form of conceptual blues. His recordings incorporate objects such as a nautical speaking tube, a Morse code generator, and a music box made from a black box flight recorder. Each object makes reference to communication at a distance and functions as a metaphor for isolation. For each song, he creates a "video storybook" that gives visual context to the narrative.
