My name is Peter Albano and I am a 35-year-old quilter born and raised in Bristol, CT. I have practiced artmaking primarily as a painter and installation artist for 15 years. Recently, I have been using fabric and quilted material as the primary medium to make my artwork. As a painter, the motifs of my artwork have orbited around masculinity and ego for years. In my past paintings, I was heavily influenced by ancient African artwork’s representational proportions and symbolic compositions. I always wanted my paintings to have the same emotional weight as an ancient totem, charm, or artifact. The concept of “art object” and “artifact” was always on my mind because of these influences and I think this ultimately played a role in my decision to make quilts. The compositions of my quilts are an evolution of my earlier paintings. The quilted images are more elaborate and deliberate, but their subject matters have only changed in their depiction. My aesthetic influences have expanded to other time periods such as colonial folk art and the origins of modernism. I intend to explore these compositions, narratives, and inspirations further with this medium. The slower, more focused pace at which these pieces are made is attributed to the summation of my early career as an artist. For the first 15 years of my artmaking, my process was fed by a relentless energy to explore various mediums, art styles, and practices. Having gestated on these many experiences, I have found a practice and medium that properly enunciates the visual language that I identify with.
